Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia:An Overview

Abstract
Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia(BPSD) are among the most distressing manifestation of dementia and results in considerable social and economic burden. They are highly prevalent in Alzheimer¢¥s disease (AD) and other progressive degenerative dementias. BPSD are one of main reasons for premature institutionalization and are mojor causes of significant loss of quality-of life for the patient and his/her family and caregivers. Recent investigations indicate that BPSD are not an epiphenomenona of cognitive impairment, but could be attributed to specific biological brain dysfuction. This brief review provides an overview of recent advances in the field of BPSD research.
